sunday lunch in yosemite

while at lunch on this beautiful sunday afternoon, a squirrel came to have a snack. a group of visitors were chatting away when the squirrel jumped up on the man's knee who was sitting at the end of the table. having finished everything but his roll, the man offered his unfinished lunch to this hungry yosemite resident.

funny thing about feeding the permanent residents of yosemite; there are signs all over that says, 'do not feed'.

anyway...this squirrel took hold of this half-eaten roll, and tried with the spirit of job, to run and bury that roll -- a lovely snack time, no doubt. trouble it, the roll was too big, and there were a couple of birds who had been eyeing this interaction.

as you might have guessed, the squirrel tried hard to find a place to bury that over sized snack. perhaps feeling defeated or simply ready to move on, the birds come and uncovered that tasty morsel, and, with two of them working in unison, rescued that whole wheat roll and brought it to rest in their nest.

and the squirrel, you ask? the table had not been cleared, and the visitors were still chatting; so back to the man who had first offered the over sized treat. alas, the food was gone, but the sharing had only begun....

we spend our time looking for that which does not fill us. only the gift of kind welcome and unending hospitality fills us to overflowing. rich gifts that we share are the most rewarding, both for the giver and the receiver. so, share something this day; be it a word of grace, the kindness of your smile, the wisdom of your skills, or the silence of prayer. and when the spirit of god comes to sit on your knee, offer what you have, freely offered; freely given; freely received. then move about your day, fulfilled with the love of christ.
